Police in Tacoma say gang members are lying low and crime is down after a crackdown on the Hilltop Crips.
Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist says of 36 prosecutions, one case was dismissed, one case was referred for federal prosecution and 34 gang members got jail or prison time.
"We didn't lose a single trial," said Lindquist. Most pled out. Those who went to trial got an average prison sentence of more than 22 years.
Charges included conspiracy, attempted murder, robbery and drive-by shooting. Lindquist says the year-long prosecutions are the first time in Washington the conspiracy statute was used to convict gang members. Lindquist calls it a victory for the community.
"Our goal was not only to send the bad actors to prison and get them off our streets but to send the message to discourage people from joining gangs," Lindquist said. The prosecutor offered charts showing that in 2008, his office charged 531 gang-related crimes. By the end of 2010, he says that number dropped to 260.
A Tacoma police detective says the Hilltop is the cleanest he's seen it in 23 years.

A 19-year-old burglar who was fatally shot Monday after breaking into an East Side Tacoma house has been identified as Jamarr "Lil SnowTop" Johnson, from Hilltop Crip Gang.
Johnson, of Tacoma, and two associates broke the glass out of a back door at a house in the 3800 block of East J Street to get inside.
A man who was home alone about 1:30 p.m. heard the burglars and hid in an upstairs bedroom. He fired several shots through the bedroom door when he heard Johnson trying to enter the room, police said.
Johnson died at the scene. One of the other burglars was arrested after a K-9 unit tracked him through the neighborhood. A third suspect is outstanding.
