Nobody really talks about Spokane gangs on here, but in the past month or two I've been reading about more gang-related shit going down over there.

TRIPLE SHOOTING AT HOOPFEST
SPOKANE -- Spokane Police say a total of three people were injured during a shooting that disrupted Hoopfest activities Saturday evening.
The shooting happened just before 6:00 p.m. as players were clearing the courts near the Rotary Fountain at Howard and Spokane Falls Boulevard, close to the Toyota Shootout area.
Police say a fight between rival gangs in Riverfront Park ended with at least one shot being fired near the fountain.
Three people were injured in the shooting, including two women who were shot in the leg and another man who was grazed by a bullet.
Both women were taken to a local hospital, police say their injuries are non-life threatening. The third male victim was treated at the scene by medics and later released.
Police say all three victims were not associated with any of the suspects or the original fight.
Multiple calls came into the 911 dispatch center just after the shooting. Those callers were able to give detailed descriptions of those involved in the fight.
Descriptions of the suspects were relayed to several officers already staged Downtown for Hoopfest. Police were on the scene of the shooting less than a minute after it happened.
Officers took five people into custody right after the shooting. Three of the suspects were followed by an off-duty officer who relayed their position to responding officers.
Police placed 19-year-old Migelito C. Garcia, 19-year-old Adam Doe and 21-year-old Marquis Johnson into custody.
Garcia was booked for three counts of 1st Degree Assault and one count of 1st Degree Unlawful Possession of a firearm, Doe was arrested for 2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and 3rd Degree Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer, Johnson was arrested for a probation violation.
Tyrone Carell, 21, and Kalen Bradford, 19, were later contacted by police and taken into custody for their role in the shooting. They were arrested for disorderly conduct.
Police say they have recovered the handgun they believe was used in the shooting, but could provide no other details about the weapon.
Several Hoopfest courts are located near the fountain, but organizers say none of the games will be canceled due to the shooting.
"This is the first incident we've had in 21 years," said Rick Steltenpohl, Executive Director of Hoopfest. "It saddens us, but we're fully confident this was a rare and isolated incident."
Steltenpohl said Hoopfest's security and operations staff were prepared for an incident like this.
"The plan worked to perfection," said Steltenpohl.
Steltenpohl added that families have no reason not to feel completely safe at Hoopfest.
Spokane Police say their investigation into the shooting is ongoing. They are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting, or those who have pictures or video of the shooting suspects and who were not already contacted by police, to call Crime Check at (509)456-2233.

GANG HOMICIDE IN WEST CENTRAL N-HOOD
Gunfire awoke Spokane community activist Cheryl Steele just after midnight Tuesday.
The founder of the city’s first police substation looked out a window of her home at 2105 W. Boone Ave. and saw a bleeding man lying near her neighbor’s front yard.
Police later identified him as 29-year Nathan D. “Trigger” Gilstrap: the city of Spokane’s third murder victim this year.
No suspects have been identified.
Gilstrap’s murder comes after months of deteriorating conditions in the West Central Neighborhood, Steele said. She started the first police substation in 1992 after two neighborhood girls were kidnapped and murdered. Crime dropped over the next 15 years, Steele said, but assaults, drug houses and gang graffiti are on the rise again as volunteers at the police stations decline.
Steele pointed to several gang-related graffiti tags on buildings in the last month, including a gang name spray-painted down an alley from where Gilstrap was shot.
“When we don’t respond, it leads to incidents like the one we had last night,” Steele said. “We need to get community members out and back into the cop shops.”
Police released few details about Gilstrap’s murder.
Steele said she heard four gunshots, “then I heard the big shot, then I heard someone say ‘Oh my…God,’” Steele said.
Gilstrap was dead on the lawn next door to Steele when police arrived. Police believe he was shot in front of Steele’s home and ran several feet before collapsing. No information on how he was shot or possible suspects have been released.
Gilstrap is a gang associate with criminal convictions, including seven theft-related felonies, beginning in 1995. He’d been out of custody since June after being sentenced to 14 months for criminal impersonation and is a witness to a fatal stabbing last summer.
In that case, Gilstrap was with two suspects police say stabbed 24-year-old Vitaly M. Shevchuk to death on July 6, 2009.
Gilstrap had been drinking with Maggie M. Tyler and Matthew M. Nedeau when Tyler and Nedeau attacked Shevchuk after the victim yelled something at their passing car, according to court documents. Nedeau and Tyler are in jail on second-degree murder charges.
Gilstrap helped police identity the suspects and was not charged in the incident.
Like Gilstrap’s murder on Tuesday, police characterized the stabbing last summer as gang-related.
But Steele bristles at that description.
“It’s sort of like saying that life didn’t count because it was gang-related,” Steele said. “It counts to somebody. Somebody gave birth to that life. Somebody loved that soul.”
But so far, community outcry against gang violence in Spokane has been quiet.
“The community doesn’t seem to want to rally around that,” Steele said.
Spokane police spokeswoman Jennifer DeRuwe said budget cuts have left the police department with fewer resources for community programs. Next year, neighborhood resource officers will be eliminated.
“It will get worse until it gets better,” DeRuwe said. “You have to take ownership in your neighborhood … and make an effort to let bad guys know what’s not going to be allowed.”

DRUG ARRESTS TARGETING GANGS
SPOKANE, WA-- A series of federal arrests is going on today as part of a lengthy drug and firearms investigation targeting Spokane-area gangs.
Already in custody are Andrew T. Burns and Dunshawn D. Morris, who were indicted by a grand jury last week on four crack cocaine charges.
Morris pleaded not guilty to the charges today in U.S. District Court. Burns has been in jail since June 4 on unrelated attempted murder charges for a shooting that seriously injured Kenneth R. Grooms near East Mallon Avenue and North Madelia Street.
More than two-dozen people also have been federally indicted, and about 30 suspects faces charges in state court, said Sgt. Mike Kittilstved.
“We’re trying to after leadership, people within leadership positions within these criminal organizations” Kittilstved said. “We know it’s not as simple as just arresting our way out of it.”
Burns was first arrested for cocaine possession after a raid in February at 14827 E. Mission Ave. A home at 2502 E. Marshall in Spokane also was searched that day, part of an investigation search warrants show focused on crack dealing by gang members who imported the drug from Los Angeles.
Kittilstved said the investigation has been going on for more than a year and is not related to the gang shooting at Hoopfest or Tuesday’s homicide.

SPOKANE -- The Spokane Police Gang Unit is investigating an overnight assault in East Spokane.
It happened just before 2:00 a.m. Monday in the area of Fifth and Magnolia.
Police say they're not sure what provoked the attack, but emergency crews ended up taking a victim to Sacred Heart Medical Center with a head injury.
We're told that injury is not life threatening.
Police say they're looking for several suspects who they believe could have been involved in this assault and other possible gang activity.

Re- your post about Trigger getting killed. He was a material witness to a homicide last year- the vic wasn't gang affiliated, but Triggers homie who stabbed the guy was. But I'm hearing Triggers death was not b/c he cooperated w/ police but more drug related. He was hooked on meth from what I hear.

November 27th, 2011 HOMICIDE IN SPOKANE- GANG RELATED
SPOKANE -- One person has been arrested for First Degree Murder in a gang-related shooting at the downtown Quality Inn. Police were dispatched to the hotel at 4th and Cowley at 2:40 a.m. when an employee called 911 to report a fight and shots being fired.
Detectives say a gang-related 'melee' broke out in the lobby of the hotel. Multiple people were injured and one person was killed. Officers found the shooting victim in an elevator surrounded by friends. The 21-year-old man was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. Quality Inn's owner says the group was in town from Moses Lake to attend a concert. Detectives say the group had been at Ichiban's Sushi Lounge earlier in the evening. Major Crimes Detectives and the Spokane Violent Crimes Gang Enforcement Team are investigating.
