Local, state and federal authorities contend that members of the Hilltop Crips street gang committed more than 50 felonies – including attempted murder, robbery and drive-by shooting – in and around Tacoma since 2008.
The alleged crimes include a purse-snatching turned violent, a riot at a local Denny’s restaurant and separate shootings that left one man paralyzed from the waist down and another in a coma.
Pierce County prosecutors intend to use organized criminal activity as the basis for a conspiracy case against 32 defendants.
Here is a synopsis of the alleged crimes gleaned from court records:
1 Date: Aug. 26, 2009.
Address: 5415 South Tacoma Way.
Incident: A man is beaten and robbed of his car in the parking lot of the 54th Street Bar. The car later is found stripped of its custom wheels and stereo equipment.
Defendants: Kenneth Hawkins, 38; Manuel Hernandez, 22; Curtis Hudson, 22; and Brandon Starks, 20.
2 Date: May 31, 2009.
Address: 3514 S. 56th St.
Incident: Someone steals a Chevy El Camino parked outside a Starbucks outlet. The car is later found stripped of its engine and 20-inch chrome wheels.
Defendants: Starks and Kerry Edwards, 17.
3 Date: Dec. 6, 2008.
Address: 8614 S. Hosmer St.
Incident: A melee breaks out at the Denny’s restaurant, with 15 to 20 Hilltop Crips allegedly involved. Video surveillance shows several young men beating victims with their fists and chairs, stomping and kicking other people, including the restaurant security guard. Gunshots are later fired in the parking lot when the fight breaks up.
Defendants: Adrian Broussard, 24; Larry Brown, 33; Hudson; Troy Justice, 28; Steven Lovelace, 22; Errol Mayers, 29; Andre Parker, 28; Bobby Joe Ezra Plain, 23; and Michael A. White, 33.
4 Date: July 22, 2009.

Incident: A man is beaten in the parking lot of the Pine Street Landing and robbed of his car, wallet and cell phone. The car later is found stripped of its rims and stereo equipment.

5 Date: July 3, 2009.

Incident: A group of men steals three cell phones from a Radio Shack and shoves a store employee to the ground while fleeing.
Defendants: Edwards, Hernandez and Hudson.
6 Date: March 30, 2009.
Address: 2300 block of South 12th Street.
Incident: Someone steals a car from in front of a home. The car later is found with its battery missing.
Defendants: Hernandez and William Norris Terry, 21.
7 Date: Sept. 15, 2009.
Address: 7000 block of South L Street.
Incident: The South Sound Gang Task Force raids a home and discovers a “sizable quantity” of marijuana, gang paraphernalia, a stolen digital camera and three loaded handguns.
Defendants: Edwards, Hernandez, Hudson and Starks.
8 Date: Sept. 9, 2009.
Address: South 14th and M streets.
Incident: Tacoma police responding to a “shots fired” call learn that a young man has been wounded nearby and taken to the hospital by a neighbor. The victim survives but is paralyzed from the waist down. Witnesses say four men were involved in the shooting.
Defendants: Lovelace; Christopher Simms, 22; Anthony J. Smith, 21; and Deondre Posey, 31.

Incident: Someone breaks into an apartment at this address and steals a 52-inch flat-screen TV, two laptop computers, three video game consoles and numerous video games.

Incident: Two men retrieve a car re-painted at the Maaco auto shop without paying the $837 bill.

Incident: Several men burst into a woman’s home, point a gun at her and then steal three televisions, two video game consoles, a laptop computer and other items. Police later find a car the robbers are suspected of using to flee the scene. Officers impound the car, which contains what appears to be stolen items, and have it towed to their secured evidence lot. On March 25, detectives discover someone has broken into the car and retrieved the stolen items.

Incident: A woman reports she accidentally left her pistol in the car of a man she met at a party. The man tries to extort money from her when she calls him to retrieve the gun, for which she has a valid concealed-weapons permit.

Incident: Someone inside a passing car yells “Hilltop Crips” before opening fire on a house where reputed Bloods gang members are attending a party. A second drive-by shooting occurs later that night at a different location.

Incident: Shots are exchanged between rival gang members kicked out of a high school football game. No one is hit.
