I founf this storie on the net. It talks about Mexicans and how cholos came up... I mean crips in bloods werent the first to bang we were..
I see Los Angeles as a post-modern Wild West where everyone has a gun and they use it. It is an uncontrolled and slightly scary place, a land of dreams and beauty, playing by its own rules. My aim in photographing gang life in Los Angeles has been to get to the core of violence in America, not just the physical violence against one another, but the quiet violence of letting families fall apart, the violence of segregation and isolation.
La vida loca, or the crazy life, is what they call the barrio gang experience. This lifestyle originated with the Mexican Pachuco gangs of the 1930s and 1940s whose own style and language in the barrios of America was linked to the urban youth style of major Mexican cities, and was later recreated with the Cholos (a term meaning "low life," appropriated by Chicano barrio youth to describe the style and people associated with local gang make-up). It became the main model and influence for outlaw bikers of the 1950s and 1960s, the L.A. punk/rock scene in the 1970s and 1980s, and the Crips and Bloods of the 1980s and 1990s. As Leon Bing commented in her 1991 book Do or Die (Harper Collins): "It was the cholo homeboy who first walked the walk and talked the talk. It was the Mexican American Pachuco who initiated the emblematic tattoos the signing with hands, the writing legends on the wall."
Although there have been truces among many of the gangs since theriots of 1992, many gang wars still continue. East L.A. has long been a neglected neighborhood with a predominately Mexican population. It has one of the nation's highest drop out rates from schools, youth unemployment hovers around seventy-five percent in the most neglected areas, and teenage pregnancy is at an all time high in this community. There is an aspect of suicide among many of these gang kids (between ten and twenty-one years old) whose options have been cut off-no education, no work, and no opportunities for advancement. They stand on street corners and parks, flashing gang signs, inviting bullets. Its either la torcida (prison) or death: a warrior's path when even self-preservation is not at stake. And if they murder, the victims are usually the ones who look like them, the ones closest to who they are-their mirror reflections. They murder and they're killing themselves, over and over.

I aint gonna lie but the cholos basically started the "gang culture" in LA. I seen dudes on here tryin to say that they dress "black" or whatever but the cholos were the 1st ones wearing khakis (dickies and Ben Davis) and rags after taking the style from the pen to the street. That was before the Watts riots and all that. Crips and bloods later adopted the khakis, chucks, rags, shoelaces, etc.

I like how you use the word "we" tryiing to make you tummbleweeds the same as 'ol hoods from Cali . . lol
Like I always say . . . gang & gangBANGING are two different things
Gangs have been around since the first Cities were born . . Some have REAL connections most fake like they do. As far as this State goes Mexicans (13 & 14's) were easily 10 years behind Crips Bloods & GD's coming to the Seattle-Tacoma area.
Dickies & Ben Davis aint got no cleets . . try aain.

Plus bloods & crips came up with the sporting the colors on the shoe laces. Don't know how you thought cholos did, but you're probably a youngster.

I dont wear none a that shit . . never have but I know were/when I seen it . . . Im sure Black n Mexicans sported it
serio needs to quit with the "we banged 1st" bullshit cause aint nobody buying it cept a REAL Southerner and even they will tell you Blacks, Mexicans, others had thier own shit going too! why the fuck you think Mexican Gangs were formed in the first fucking place? - Cause they were getting banged on prison style by others.
When I used to run the streets Downtown Seattle 24/7 (MKK days) Mexican dude from Texas was going out with a Sista he kicked like Bruce Lee and was quick to fight, Back in the day all Brown got along! he dressed just like them Mexicans from Colors and Im talking 3-4 years before that movie even came out. Even before that some of the best breakdancers n boppers in all Seattle were Mexicans - Carlos from Roxbury Village/High Point & Rafeal & Roselino from Beacon Hill them mufukas was 100% original Chicano and weren't about Dickies n shit like that but were a gang.
Quit getting your facts from internet articles

I don't even see black gangs dressing like that in Seattle, with the dickies and all that shit. These new generation of black gangsters are wearing whats popular in the hip-hop and rap culture, multi-color, bling bling, flashy, money $$ sign type of clothing. At most I see them wearing a bandanna out the back pocket or maybe a baseball hat that reps their gang.
The Mexican gangs (At least the ones I see in Yakima) wear the dickies, red/blue shoe laces, Ben davis, showing their colors, more gangster style of clothing.. Not so much of the flashy stuff.

Well if your profile has the right bd on it, then you're right. You're about a month older then me.... LOL My bad, at 1st I thought maybe you were a younster. Well I got to give it to you on the khaki suit thing, cuzz when it comes to g's.... I think cholos were the 1's sporting that heavily 1st. As far as Ben's.... Nortenos been sporting those since way back in the days. Ben Davis straight out of SAN FRAN, along with levi's. Dickies were sported by cholos 20+ tears ago too, so don't know why kNeGnBt acted that way & what he means by "cleeted pants". Did you mean pleats (actually some Dickies do have pleats & that company has changed through out the years)? Well those were definately worn a lot by cholos, especially at certain times. A lot of Nortenos were into Bens & other creased jeans at 1 point, but you would also see some pleats or some type of khakis. Crips were very much into the creased up jeans too, but that was way back in the days & I'm sure some of them had some pleated pants, or khakis. I know at 1 point it seemed like a lot of those b's were into track suits, so a lot of styles came into play thru out all these years. I think it just depended on the individuals & the time period. Just like how I said c's were into creased up jeans, but they were also into "kung fu" shoes & brims (along with bloods, who even have an old school gang called brims). Point is that pretty much all this stuff were talking about is mainly who started what, but at 1 point both the brothers & cholos were wearing old school shit (especially when they were living in those days). I think the only old school style that cholos didn't wear so much off blacks back in the days, was the track suit stuff. I'm even wondering now if cholos really were the 1st to wear khaki suits, cuzz blacks starting wearing those a long time ago too & some cholos didn't like sporting the whole khaki suit. Cholos wore Cortez way more, like they never died out & to a lot of black people some of the old school stuff is exactly that (old)!
